Making the Switch: A 7-Day Guide to Moving from Toothpaste to Herbal Tooth Powder
Share
Switching from a lifetime of minty, foaming toothpaste to a herbal tooth powder can feel a little strange at first. But once you get used to the texture and the fact that it doesn’t foam, the change is quite simple.
If you're thinking about making the switch, here's what you can expect during your first week.
Before you start: pick the right variant
Danta Manjari comes in three variants, so you can choose one based on what feels right for you:
Classic — A mild and gentle formula with a lighter taste. A good choice if you prefer something subtle.
Strong — A more intense flavour with extra clove and pepper. It's closer to the strength of a regular toothpaste, but without the strong burning sensation some traditional tooth powders can have.
Kids (ages 2–13) — A gentler formula designed for children's developing teeth and suitable even if a small amount is accidentally swallowed.
If you're used to regular toothpaste and want something that feels more familiar, Strong may be an easier place to start. If you'd rather ease into the change, Classic is a good option.
Day 1–2: Get used to the texture
Start by wetting your toothbrush and dipping the bristles into a small amount of powder. Then brush as you normally would.
You can also try a more traditional approach: take a small amount of powder on a wet finger and gently massage it over your teeth and gums.
The main thing during the first couple of days is simply getting comfortable with the different texture.
Day 3–4: Notice the "no foam" feeling
This is probably the biggest difference you'll notice.
Danta Manjari doesn't contain SLS, so it doesn't create the familiar foamy lather you're used to with toothpaste. Instead, you'll notice a light, grainy texture while brushing.
That's part of the experience. The rice husk ash provides a gentle polishing action that helps clean away plaque and surface stains.
Day 5–7: Build the twice-daily habit
By now, the texture should start feeling much more familiar.
For everyday oral care, brush your teeth and tongue twice a day. If you're experiencing tooth sensitivity or discomfort, you can use it up to three times a day for a short period.
Don't forget your tongue, either. A quick, gentle brush can help remove the bacteria and residue that build up there, especially overnight.
What you may notice after the first week
With regular use, you may start noticing:
- Fresher breath — thanks to ingredients such as clove and camphor, which help address the bacteria associated with mouth odour.
- A cleaner feeling — teeth can feel less coated or "filmy" after brushing.
- Less visible surface staining — consistent brushing can gradually help remove surface stains.
Everyone's teeth and gums are different, so results won't look the same for everyone. If you're dealing with sensitivity, give it a little time. Some people may notice a difference within one to two weeks. If your sensitivity continues or doesn't improve, it's worth speaking with your dentist.
How long does one jar last?
A 40g jar can last roughly 1 to 1.5 months for one person when used twice a day. You only need a small pinch each time, so there's no need to use a large amount.
The first few days are really just about getting used to something different. Once you get past the no-foam feeling and the new texture, using tooth powder can become just as easy as your usual brushing routine.
